Emissions? ... what emissions?!

Hampshire based independent Xelabus have acquired 3 Volvo B5L Hybrid double decker buses.  The vehicles are low floor hybrid electric buses driven by a parallel hybrid drive system.  The new buses achieve 35% improvement on fuel consumption and reduces the emission of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide by an equivalent amount.

When the buses are stationary at bus stops or in traffic congestion, the electric motors take over until the vehicle reaches 20mph when the engine restarts.

Managing Director, Gareth Blair said “these buses show our ongoing commitment to the local community to drive forward our plans to continually invest in cleaner, greener buses.  These buses are the first of their type in Hampshire and will be a huge benefit to the environment.”  The buses are intended to work on our X4 bus service between Hedge End and Eastleigh and on Itchen College bus services though partnership with Itchen College to provide cleaner student transport.  David Garney Public Transport Officer at Southampton City Council said “Southampton City Council are pleased to see the continued investment that Hampshire Independent bus operator Xelabus are placing in their bus fleet, both now and the future’

Xelabus have recently announced plans to upgrade existing fleet vehicles to Euro 6 standards through Southampton City Council grant funding and that other vehicles will be replaced with new Euro 6 buses over the coming months.
